An easy-to-make refreshing drink that screams summer for me! What could be better than a refreshing drink that’s sweet, citrusy, fizzy and creamy all at the same time? Most of this recipe’s ingredients are easy to find in big chain grocery stores. The “most difficult” to find might be Yakult, but I’ve definitely spotted them being sold at my local Whole Foods and Wegmans. If you don’t see Yakult hanging around in your local grocery’s yogurt aisle, the Asian grocery store would be your next best bet. Try this refresher before the summer ends; if not, tag it for next summer!
Yakult: Probiotics? Fermented? What?
Yakult was originally created in Japan and marketed as a healthy fermented dairy probiotic drink. Considering that each 2.7oz bottle has 10g of sugar, I’m unsure if “healthy” accurately describes this drink. If you’re lactose intolerant but can take yogurt, it should be safe to enjoy. However, do take extra precautions if you’re extremely lactose intolerant.
I’ve drank Yakult since I was a kid and can only describe the taste as sweet, citrusy and creamy. It’s difficult to compare it to anything else, as the flavor notes are pretty unique. Yakult became popular in the US when it was featured in the Netflix film “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” so if you want to keep up with trends, now is the time to try one!
Citrus Juicer? I’m not that fancy
I wasn’t that fancy too, until my husband decided that he was tired of store-bought orange juice and wanted to make his own from actual fresh oranges. He’s passed that phase, but we’ll always have the citrus juicer to remind us of the moment when I said, “I told you so..”.
If you don’t have a citrus juicer, feel free to peel the grapefruits and blend. Strain the pulp, and voila, grapefruit juice!
Using a citrus juicer, squeeze out the juice from grapefruits.
Transfer juice to a small jug. Add sugar and stir until all sugar granules dissolve.
Add Yakult and sparkling water.
Serve over ice cubes in a drinking glass. Enjoy!
